On April 20th 2022, the Royal Albert Hall hosted a helluva rock event…and I had backstage access!
Suzi Quatro’s show at The Royal Albert Hall had been over two years in the planning – but had been on Suzi’s bucket list for much longer.
This rock and roll extravaganza, embracing her 50-year mega list of hits, was an incredible experience – and not just for the 1000s of rockers going wild in the audience. Stage-side and armed with my trusty camera, I was having the time of my life, having been offered the chance to take photographs of the show.
Some time back, Suzi had shared with me that it was her dream to play the Albert Hall, something she had wanted to do her whole career. I had asked her at the time if I could come and take photographs. She’d said yes…but when it finally happened, I never in a million years expected an access-all-areas pass.
As for the show, I managed to capture it all: preparation in the dressing room and in-the-wings excitement, the amazing and dedicated team and Suzi’s talented musicians (including guest appearances by Don Powell from Slade and Andy Scott from The Sweet), Suzi’s family and of course Suzi herself, truly ‘The Queen of Rock and Roll’ that evening.
Still a die-hard rocker and pioneer at 71 years old, dressed in diamanté jeans with a studded leather jacket and glittering bass strap, Suzi Q played her heart and soul out for her beloved fans, never, ever failing to put their enjoyment and experience first and foremost. As ever, the champagne was saved until after the show (she never drinks alcohol before going on stage.)
No ego, no tantrums, no privileged attitude, Suzi was a true professional, visiting all the musicians and backing singers’ dressing rooms prior to the gig to offer her support. A true down-to-earth dynamo.
It was an unforgettable night both as a music-lover and from my perspective behind the lens watching and hearing the crowd go wild. Enjoy the images… and click the link below to see the snippet of video I filmed of the moment Suzi walked out onto that stage!
(And yes, she absolutely wore the leather jumpsuit. In the second half. 100% rocker for life.)
