Over 163,000 visitors so far!

First Women UK at Clifford Chance, London & Newcastle

After nearly 12 months in storage, the First Women portraits commence a six-week residency in London and Newcastle in March 2024.

To mark 2024 Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8th, two ‘private’ exhibitions will be opening at the offices of law firm, Clifford Chance.

Around 40 portraits from the collection will be on display in their Canary Wharf offices in London and 10 portraits will be showing at their Newcastle offices. There will be official openings; the London event will be attended by Jill Pay (First Woman Sergeant at Arms in the House of Commons) and Baroness Usha Prashar (First Woman Civil Service Commissioner)  and other Firsts to be confirmed. The Newcastle event on March 7th will be opened by  Dr. Jane Atkinson, whose portrait is part of the collection as First Woman in the world to manage a blast furnace.

First Women ready to be unpacked again after nearly a year in storage!

These will be the 10th and 11th exhibitions of First Women UK since the London launch in July 2018.  What a thrill it was to have so many First Women in the gallery to celebrate the opening back then. Can you believe that was over five years ago!
Since then the portraits have been on tour around the UK and have been seen by over 160,000 visitors.

Clifford Chance writes of the event…

‘To mark 2024 Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, we are excited to be displaying a selection of 50 portraits from photographer Anita Corbin’s acclaimed exhibition, “First Women UK”, across both our London and Newcastle offices . Over the course of a decade, Anita photographed 100 women in the UK who were “first” in their field of achievement. The full collection was revealed in 2018 to mark 100 years of women’s suffrage. We are delighted to be able to host Anita and a curated exhibition of her inspirational portraits in order to #InspireInclusion this International Women’s Day.’

The offices of Clifford Chance in Canary Wharf will be home to the exhibition until April

The portraits can be visited by the public, but by appointment only. Please email anita@1stwomenuk.co.uk to organise a viewing.
The portraits are open to view from 1st March 2024 until 12th April 2024.
