Dame Clare Marx – First Woman and Inspiration

Dame Clare Marx Interview

Monday 27th November 2022: Dame Clare Marx has passed away at the age of 68.

First Woman President of the British Orthopaedic Association and the First Woman President of The Royal College of Surgeons, Dame Clare Marx DBE DL FRCS, was a pioneer and tenacious champion for women in the medical profession.
We were honoured to not just photograph but also interview her in 2020 when, even during the pandemic she found time to get on a call to us during lockdown (you can read the interview here).
Her humbleness and sustained, heartfelt enthusiasm for change in a male-dominated and challenging environment were deeply inspiring. Even in her early career as an orthopaedic surgeon Dame Clare was a trailblazer; one of so few women in the profession in the early 90s.

In 2007 she was awarded a CBE and in 2018 a DBE for services to medicine.
